| Background
CompuLab products are designed using
components for the mobile / desktop PC industry. This type of
component has many advantages, such as a better set of features,
lower price and availability of drivers. However, manufacturers of
PC components often do not bother to provide a commitment regarding
the capability of their components for operation in the wide
temperature range (-40° C to +85° C).
Temperature Tests Conducted at
CompuLab
Tests performed at CompuLab have
revealed that practically all related components are capable of
operating in a very wide temperature range. Components which showed
temperature sensitivity have been rejected and replaced
by non-temperature sensitive counterparts. Final board
assemblies have been tested and found fully functional in the
-60° C to +95° C (on case) temperature range. (See sample test
report.) Furthermore, clarifications conducted directly
with component manufacturers have revealed that manufacturers
usually certify components in a wide temperature range, for their
own quality assurance purposes.
Since component specifications can
change, sample cards from every new manufactured batch are tested to
confirm the capability of the board to operate in wide temperature
range.
Availability of Industrial
Temperature Cards
Based on the above-mentioned
considerations, CompuLab's policy regarding industrial temperature
availability is as follows:
-
Samples
of manufactured cards are periodically tested in a temperature
chamber, to confirm capability.
-
As
long as sample cards are found capable of wide temp
operation, CompuLab is ready to accept orders for Industrial
Temperature grade cards.
In general, this method assures that
cards for industrial temperature range will be available during an
entire product's life cycle, assuming that components capable of
industrial temp range are available.
Manufacturing and Testing of Cards
The cards' manufacturing and testing
method changes according to the required temperature range:
|
Range
|
Temp.
|
Description
|
|
Commercial
|
0o to 70o C
|
Sample cards from each batch are tested at the lower and
upper temperature limits. Individual cards are not tested
for temperature compliance.
|
|
Extended
|
-20o to 70o C
|
Every card is individually tested for the lower limit
(-20o C) qualification.
|
|
Industrial
|
-40o to 85o C
|
Cards are assembled with certain components (those which
are available) specifically graded by the manufacturer for
industrial range. Note that as mentioned above, not all
components are available with such a grade.
Every card is individually tested for both lower and upper
temperature limits and at several midpoints.
